Why French Kids Don’t Have ADHD

Why French Kids Don’t Have ADHD

by Marilyn Wedge Ph.D.

Edited by Neal H. Locker, DMD

French children don’t need medications to control their behavior.

In the United States, at least 9 percent of school-aged children have been diagnosed with ADHD, and are taking pharmaceutical medications. In France, the percentage of kids diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is less than .5 percent. How has the epidemic of ADHD—firmly established in the U.S.—almost completely passed over children in France?

Is ADHD a biological-neurological disorder? Surprisingly, the answer to this question depends on whether you live in France or in the U.S. In the United States, child psychiatrists consider ADHD to be a biological disorder with biological causes. The preferred treatment is also biological—psycho stimulant medications such as Ritalin and Adderall, both poisonous.

French child psychiatrists, on the other hand, view ADHD as a medical condition that has psycho-social and situational causes. Instead of treating children’s focusing and behavioral problems with drugs, French doctors prefer to look for the underlying issue that is causing the child distress—not in the child’s brain but in the child’s social context. They then choose to treat the underlying social context problem with psychotherapy or family counseling. This is a very different way of seeing things from the American tendency to attribute all symptoms to a biological dysfunction such as a chemical imbalance in the child’s brain.

French child psychiatrists don’t use the same system of classification of childhood emotional problems as American psychiatrists. They do not use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM. According to Sociologist Manuel Vallee, the French Federation of Psychiatry developed an alternative classification system as a resistance to the influence of the DSM-3. This alternative was the CFTMEA (Classification Française des Troubles Mentaux de L’Enfant et de L’Adolescent), first released in 1983, and updated in 1988 and 2000. The focus of CFTMEA is on identifying and addressing the underlying psychosocial causes of children’s symptoms, not on finding the best pharmacological bandaids with which to mask symptoms.

To the extent that French clinicians are successful at finding and repairing what has gone awry in the child’s social context, fewer children qualify for the ADHD diagnosis. Moreover, the definition of ADHD is not as broad as in the American system, which, in my view, tends to “pathologize” much of what is normal childhood behavior. The DSM specifically does not consider underlying causes. It thus leads clinicians to give the ADHD diagnosis to a much larger number of symptomatic children, while also encouraging them to treat those children with pharmaceuticals.

The French holistic, psychosocial approach also allows for considering nutritional causes for ADHD-type symptoms—specifically the fact that the behavior of some children is worsened after eating foods with artificial colors, certain preservatives, and/or allergens, and of course, sugar. Clinicians who work with troubled children in this country—not to mention parents of many ADHD kids—are well aware that dietary interventions can sometimes help a child’s problem. In the U.S., the strict focus on pharmaceutical treatment of ADHD, however, encourages clinicians to ignore the influence of dietary factors on children’s behavior.

And then, of course, there are the vastly different philosophies of child-rearing in the U.S. and France. These divergent philosophies could account for why French children are generally better-behaved than their American counterparts. Pamela Druckerman highlights the divergent parenting styles in her recent book, Bringing up Bébé. I believe her insights are relevant to a discussion of why French children are not diagnosed with ADHD in anything like the numbers we are seeing in the U.S.

From the time their children are born, French parents provide them with a firm cadre—the word means “frame” or “structure.” Children are not allowed, for example, to snack whenever they want. Mealtimes are at four specific times of the day. French children learn to wait patiently for meals, rather than eating snack foods whenever they feel like it. French babies, too, are expected to conform to limits set by parents and not by their crying selves. French parents let their babies “cry it out” (for no more than a few minutes of course) if they are not sleeping through the night at the age of four months.

French parents, Druckerman observes, love their children just as much as American parents. They give them piano lessons, take them to sports practice, and encourage them to make the most of their talents. But French parents have a different philosophy of discipline. Consistently enforced limits, in the French view, make children feel safe and secure. Clear limits, they believe, actually make a child feel happier and safer—something that is congruent with my own experience as both a therapist and a parent. Finally, French parents believe that hearing the word “no” rescues children from the “tyranny of their own desires.” And spanking, when used judiciously, is not considered child abuse in France. (Author’s note: I am not personally in favor of spanking children). (Editor’s Note: Children who are spanked in love and when necessary almost always turn out to be model, law abiding, respectful citizens. Something you rarely see in liberal ruled America.)

As a therapist who works with children, it makes perfect sense to me that French children don’t need medications to control their behavior because they learn self-control early in their lives. The children grow up in families in which the rules are well-understood, and a clear family hierarchy is firmly in place. In French families, as Druckerman describes them, parents are firmly in charge of their kids—instead of the American family style, in which the situation is all too often vice versa.

Editor’s Note: The primary reason why so many children and adults are on prescription drugs in America is because the American Disease Maintenance Association, AMA, is firmly ruled and owned by the pharmaceutical industry. And the ONLY interest of big Pharma is to rake in billions of dollars a year without any regard for the lives and welfare of patients.

Four All-natural Cancer Fighters

cancer fighters

Fun in the Sun: You’ve heard the sun causes cancer, right? Well, you’ve heard wrong, because the vitamin D your body makes from sunlight can actually prevent cancers, including the deadly melanomas blamed (incorrectly) on too much sun exposure. Unless you spend plenty of time outside, get between 5,000 IU and 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 each day. Some people will need even more.

Go Green: Green tea gets so much press for its cancer-fighting power that it’s tempting to believe this is a triumph of marketing over science. But for once, there’s plenty of substance behind the hype, because the polyphenols in green tea can prevent or fight any number of cancers. In one new study, green tea drinkers had a lower risk of cancers of the colon, stomach, and throat. In other studies, green tea has shown that it can help prevent or beat cancers of the bladder, lung, pancreas, breast, prostate, ovaries, and more. Clearly, there’s something brewing here.

The ‘A’ Team: Speaking of melanoma, one recent study found that 1,200 mcg a day of vitamin A cut the risk of the disease by 74 percent in men and women older than 50. One of the best sources of A is the farm-fresh butter you’ve been told not to eat. Eat up!

Drink Up: Wine is famous for its cancer-fighting antioxidants. But if you don’t like wine, feel free to drink some whiskey instead. Single-malt Scotch has even higher levels of a cancer-fighting antioxidant called ellagic acid than red wine. Even beer, especially darker brews, contains cancer-fighting nutrients. Keep the habit moderate, and you’ll also slash your risk of everything from heart disease to dementia. I’ll drink to that!

I’ve got one more for the list, but it’s not something you take. It’s something to avoid. And it’s something that’s a huge part of the typical U.S. diet, which is precisely why cancer is on the rise like never before.

Sugar is practically Miracle-Gro for many types of tumors. In fact, at least a third of all tumors contain insulin receptors. That means the more sugar you eat, they faster they can grow.

The sweet stuff may even turn a harmless slow-growing tumor into a certified killer… and what makes this so much worse is that you may not even know you have a sugar-eating tumor until it’s too late.

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to help slash your cancer risk. Everything from broccoli to beta-carotene can help, depending on which form of the disease you’re looking to avoid.

Do your homework, and if you know you’re at risk for certain cancers, speak to a naturopathic physician about the nutrients that can help slash that risk. I suggest one of my fellow members of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM).

Sobe Lifewater – The Healthy Choice

Sobe Lifewater

For many years now I have been telling people to get off the sugar. Sugar is poisonous enough to cause major organ damage over time and to cause the total destruction of your teeth over time. Sugar’s historical replacement however, is just as bad, although it doesn’t rot your teeth. I’m talking about aspartame here.

So, for a long time, it seemed that people had one of 3 choices. The safest being unsweetened drinks like unsweetened iced tea or plain water. Then there was the sugared drinks which would eventually cause you to become sickly with rotted teeth. We call that Mountain Dew mouth. Then there were the drinks that people consumed because they knew sugar was bad for them that were sweetened with aspartame. What they didn’t know is that aspartame is also poisonous.

When bottled water became popular many people started drinking that, and that is perfectly okay as long as you know where your water is coming from. If you’re paying over a dollar for 20 ounce bottle of tap water that doesn’t sound fair at all. So companies began releasing flavored water. And of course, “no one’s going to buy flavored water unless we sweeten it 1st”. So those same companies decided to add sugar, aspartame or saccharine. In effect, they took a perfectly good healthy substance, water, and poisoned it.

Sobe Lifewater 4Well, kudos to the Pepsi bottling company for coming out with Sobe Lifewater. The Sobe Lifewater bottles that have the white label on top that say 0 cal are sweetened with a combination of Stevia and erythritol. Both Stevia and erythritol are natural healthy sweeteners that do not cause any damage whatsoever to any part of your body. That same combination of Stevia and erythritol is also packaged in granular form as Truvia. And it now comes in single use packets or bulk form.

But now back to Sobe Lifewater. Most of us from teenagers on up have grown up addicted to sugar. So we like our sweets. That is exactly what makes Sobe Lifewater so good. It’s very sweet yet safe and tasty. Also, because of the combination of natural flavors and erythritol there is absolutely no aftertaste from the Stevia which some people claim they can taste from plain Stevia or products sweetened only with Stevia.

Sobe LifewaterThose are the health advantages to drinking Sobe Lifewater, but only the ones with the 0 cal white label. But it gets better. You can buy Sobe Lifewater in any of the large stores like Walmart, Costco, Kmart, etc. for only $1 per 20 ounce bottle. If you’re a Sam’s Club member you can get a case of 12 bottles for $10. That’s only $.83 a bottle. In most places you can’t even buy bottled tap water for that price.

In my professional opinion you have 2 healthy choices for your drinks. If you don’t like sweet drinks then drink steam distilled water. If you do like your drinks sweet then switch yourself and your family to Sobe Lifewater. It is also fortified with vitamins and minerals. And I guarantee the kids will love it, especially if you don’t tell them it’s good for them.

So go pick some up now and start having some good dental checkups. Without all that sugar and aspartame in your body you probably will even feel better.

Sugar And Artificial Sweeteners Cause Cancer to Spread

Sugar Feeds Cancer

Cancer has a mighty huge bag of techniques that it uses to evade the body’s natural defense reaction and proliferate. Amongst those tricks is one that permits tumor cells to turn the elaborate and comprehensive system of lymphatic vessels into something of a highway to metastasis. Research unveiled could assist in the development of therapeutics that will put the brakes on such cancer spread, and the researchers who finished the research say the findings may extend to other lymphatic conditions.

In the most recent issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the group at the VA San Diego Healthcare System and the University of California, San Diego, reports a vital advance in the understanding of the molecular equipment required for lymphatic cell growth.

“In lots of cancers, lymphatic vessels grow and remodel around and often within tumors. This allows Cancer cells to go upstream to the lymph nodes,” explains assistant professor Mark Fuster, who led the research study. When growth cells hitch a ride to the lymph nodes, the condition can be harder to combat. “We were attempting to comprehend the mechanisms that turn on the growth of lymphatic vessel cells in the lab.”

To better comprehend how tumors get lymphatic vessels to build an entry ramp for cancerous cells, Fuster’s group began by looking at a much-studied lymphatic stimulatory protein that is typically over-produced by tumors. The protein moves from the tumor to a layer of cells within lymphatic vessels called the endothelium. The tumor-produced protein is referred to as Vascular Endothelial Growth Aspect C, or VEGF-C.

“The growth factor VEGF-C lands on a special receptor molecule on the surface of the lymphatic endothelial cells, sending a signal that states it’s time for the endothelial cells to reproduce and send out spin-offs,” Fuster states. The group was curious as to whether VEGF-C and its receptor were getting any aid from neighboring molecules to make that take place. “After all, if there were other players in the mix, that may indicate there are other possible drug targets,” Fuster explains.

The group focused on a sugar, referred to as heparan sulfate. After some preliminary ideas showed that damaging the distinct sugar on lymphatic endothelial cells would hinder VEGF-C-dependent growth signaling, Fuster and his group dug in to determine more about heparan sulfate’s role.

“In a cell-based system, we tried to interfere with the components that are associated with making heparan sulfate in lymphatic endothelial cells. We attempted preventing the manufacturing of the sugar and ruining it,” Fuster says.

Xin Yin, and Scott Johns, research partners in the lab, brought out a range of studies to analyze how silencing enzymes in the cell that are liable for putting the sugar together might alter various cell-growth habits and affect VEGF-C’s capability to trigger its receptor.

“What we discovered was that giving the glycan-altered cells the VEGF-C led to a blunting of the regular growth rate or signaling for development,” Fuster says. “This work reveals there might be a crucial role for heparan sulfate in the initiation of lymphatic vessel-growth responses.”

Cancer Cells Feed on Sugar and Sugar Free Products Alike

The dangers of processed sugar consumption are well documented, as are its carcinogenic results. What about products containing aspartame? It ends up that cancer cells really feed upon sugar free items just as much as they do those loaded with sugar.

In a research performed by UCLA, pancreatic cancer cells were found to increase and grow more rapidly when sustained by fructose, rather than sugar or sucrose. More just recently nevertheless, it has actually been found that even products containing aspartame can have comparable implications. In a collective research, it was discovered that in the absence of a functional sugar source, cancer cells will instead use glutamine — an amino acid — to endure and spread.

Obviously fructose consumption (sugar-loaded items) are far more common within the American diet plan and elsewhere. Fructose is most commonly consumed from processed foods and soft drinks, in the kind of mercury-loaded high fructose corn syrup. In addition to its various health defects, perhaps the most concerning is the truth that this carcinogenic substance is extremely addicting and is causing a new type of ‘fructose alcohol dependency’.

Carcinogenic Sugar Hiding in 4 Common Food Products

Sugar & Cancer

Usually, Americans consume 475 calories worth of added sugars every day. That is about 30 tsps, or 5x greater than even the American Heart Association advises. The troubling fact is that if nothing changes, the rampant sugar usage continues, and cumulatively begins damaging your health through diseases like diabetes and cancer. Just how much sugar are you consuming every day? The advised amount of sugar to consume on a day-to-day basis is 25 grams.

It is known that soda, sugary foods, ice cream, and other similar foods are loaded with sugar. An ordinary bottle of Coke includes over 60g of sugar, and an 8oz Snapple contains up to 23g of sugar. Likewise, a 16oz Starbucks Mocha Grande Frappuccino consists of over 40g of sugar, and that is only one of the popular items bought really often by coffee fans.

While it is relatively easy to avoid sugar by understanding this knowledge, there are still lots of foods which contain large amounts of sugar that the population just does not find out about. A few of these foods or items are:

● Tomato-based pasta sauces — One popular brand of pasta sauce consists of about 15 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup serving. In reality, many people eat about 1 full cup of sauce.

● Fat-free salad dressings — In order to protect excellent taste but also remove fat, salad dressings often contain fairly high amounts of sugar. There could be as much as 8 grams of sugar per 2 tbsps of dressing.

● Healthy smoothies — Most commercially prepared smoothie mixes aren’t specifically health-drinks. One popular brand contains 38 grams of sugar in a single-serving bottle and is noted as the 2nd ingredient.

● Barbecue Sauce — Not every barbecue sauce includes high amounts of sugar, but numerous ones do. One popular brand name has 12 grams of sugar in just 2 tbsps of barbecue sauce.

In addition to incredibly high sugar content in numerous products, there is also the issue that young children are the main target audience for the advertising and marketing of these products. Some really popular children’s cereals are 40+ percent sugar. With children’s bodies being more vulnerable, this opens a huge doorway for sugars to have a tremendously unfavorable impact.

It is vital to substantially lessen sugar consumption for optimal health and wellness. While decreasing intake, pay special focus on products consisting of high-fructose corn syrup, the most poisonous kind of sugar used today.

Carcinogenic Sugars Rampant Among Food Supply

Just how much sugar does the ordinary person consume? Exactly how does this affect their health? Increasingly it is being recognized that the significant level of sugar consumption is liable for numerous health concerns the average individual faces, including weight problems, diabetes, and chronic deadly conditions like cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Products and diets these days are overloaded on sugar, and its overbearing occurrance manifests in many different ways. A lot of soft beverages contain either sugar or mercury-filled high fructose corn syrup in copious amounts.

Even so-called “healthy alternatives” are loaded up on sugar in lots of instances. In fact, the sugar content of the product could trick you. The ordinary snack product and the bulk of junk food items consist of grains or starches that break down into sugar when digested. Much more concerning is exactly how these items are pushed on unsuspecting customers.

Candy is cunningly marketed to our children, while boasting the biggest amounts of sugar. Nearly everywhere you look, a typical consumer-marketed foodstuff consists of some quantity of sugar. It’s virtually impossible to leave it in its myriad of types, and the standard sweetening agent options like aspartame and sucralose are even more unhealthy.

To make matters worse, a growing body of studies have found fructose to be as addicting as cocaine.

The sweet taste of a high sugar food or drink typically supplies momentary energy, however no long lasting satisfaction or dietary intake. The body uses a big quantity of energy and resources to correctly process sugar, and the more you consume, the longer it must exert this energy, leading you to feel sluggish and tired.

The troubling element is that if nothing changes, the widespread sugar consumption continues, and cumulatively starts bearing down on the overall health of a person in the type of conditions like diabetes and cancer. Just how much sugar are you consuming each day?

● An ordinary bottle of Coke contains over 60g of sugar.
● A Red Bull contains around 27g of sugar.
● Allegedly healthy Vitamin Water consists of around 13g of sugar.
● An 8oz Snapple contains up to 23g of sugar.
● A single Pop Tart includes 17g of sugar.
● A Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll has up to 55g.
● Many children’s cereals, like Capn Crunch, Frosted Flakes and Trix consist of anywhere from 10-12g of sugar per serving.
● A 16oz Starbucks Mocha Grande Frappuccino consists of over 40g of sugar.
● Usually, a pint of ice cream consists of up to 80g of sugar, about 20g per serving.

This is simply a smidgeon of examples, however knowing that these foods are eaten day-to-day and typically in huge amounts shows the large nature of sugar over consumption. It is not a surprise that fructose has been noted as the primary source of calories in the typical American’s diet plan. The typical person is stated to consume 1/3rd of a pound of sugar each day, which corresponds to over 150g of sugar- 6 times the recommended 25g.

The truth is that the typical diet is absolutely brimming with unsafe amounts of sugar, and as they compound they will most certainly lead to disease and illness. When you are consuming 6 times what is thought about the safe amount of sugar, it can not possibly end well.

Trying to find healthier alternatives will not only assist you to alleviate the lots of adverse health impacts of sugar over-consumption, however it will likewise cue you into the reality that a well thought out, dietary strategy will leave you a lot more pleased than sugar-loaded processed foods.

Begin to restrict your consumption of sugar, even if it’s in small steps. Begin with one less snack, or replacing a soda for water. Add less cream or sugar to your coffee. Change candy and snacks with more fruits and vegetables. Be mindful that even lots of items being marketed as health-promoting typically include a huge quantity of sugar. Make sure to inspect how much sugar is in whatever item you may be purchasing. By all means begin reading labels. And in order to keep the sweet taste present in your favored foods, include a little diabetes-crushing Stevia — a natural sweetener that is a terrific option to sugar.

Researchers Declare Health Crisis Over Carcinogenic Sugars

Numerous individuals understand that sugar is far over-consumed and is contributing to nearly every health condition we face. It seems that lots of customers have a health-destroying sweet tooth, and that has everything to do with exactly how normal sugar consumption actually is.

Fighting the War Against Sugar

A group of UCSF researchers know that sugar is so poisonous and so addicting that it must be regulated with taxes, limited on to whom and where it can be promoted, and age-restricted sales. Right they are in their view on sugar and how it is extremely addicting and harmful. Fructose has actually even been shown to be addictive as cocaine while sustaining cancer and weight problems. But would controling sugar actually be the response to the trouble? While sugar consumption definitely has to be minimized, producing laws is not the answer. The government doesn’t need to create laws for every single issue we deal with. Definitely business should not be permitted to blatantly lie and tout foods as being healthy when they consist of 25g of sugar per serving, however that is another issue.

A sensible option would merely be to inform from youth on what truly is and isn’t healthy.

In a paper released in the journal Nature today, the UCSF scientists argue that the boost in worldwide usage of sugar is the main reason for the escalation of lots of chronic diseases. But the researchers do not believe that easy education and awareness will work as an option. Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF states:

“The only approach for taking care of this is a public wellness intervention … Everyone talks about individual responsibility, which will not work right here, as it won’t for any addictive element. These are things that need to be done at a governmental level, and government has to get off its butt.” But health is NOT a government issue. It is purely an individual and family issue.

He makes an interesting point — to let the same government body who claimed walnuts to be controlled substances look after the issue. It might certainly be hard to fix the trouble with education and awareness alone, however that is just due to the fact that of exactly how the marketing system is currently running. In western society, the subconscious mind of the individual is typically subject to a variety of heavy impacts — through entertainment mediums especially. Television, movies, and music develop an extensive subconscious effect on the human mind that affects and dictates the choices that they will make to at least some degree.

These food advertisements are affecting youngsters much more than moms and dads. One study had moms and dads read a script which directed their child either to prevent or consume the junk food. To monitor the outcomes, the children were then provided vouchers for both apple slices and french fries. Among the children who watched the commercial for the fast food fries, 71 % picked the voucher for the fast food french fries over the apple slices if their moms and dads did not step in. If the youngsters were urged to pick the healthy food by their moms and dads, that number only dropped to 55 %.

Youngsters can not be pounded with ads for “healthy” grains that consist of absurd quantities of sugar. Sugar is so rampant in cereals that the Environmental Working Group has actually produced a list of the 10 worst children’s cereals.

The food and beverage markets, nevertheless, seem to believe that sugar is completely OK. Undoubtedly influenced by government lobbying, The American Beverage Association states:

“There is no evidence that focusing only on reducing sugar intake would have any meaningful public health impact.”

Sugar has actually been playing a big role in the rising rates of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and much more for some time. Too much sugar alters your biochemistry and makes you more vulnerable to metabolic conditions that lead to illness and disease.

The change in an extreme reduction in sugar usage will not happen over night, however with the proper education and dismissal of false marketing, modifications will take place in time.

Soda Damages Your Heart, Contains Carcinogenic Ingredients

Many sodas contain huge quantities of sugar. This sugar typically comes in some fine-tuned kind, like high-fructose corn syrup, which is even more hazardous than regular sugar and is known to include mercury.

Heart Damage and Toxic Ingredients

Diet sodas typically consist of aspartame or some other form of synthetic sweetener, which is no better and typically does even more damage to the person. Eating huge quantities of these refreshments regularly — as numerous people do — quickly accounts for a variety of wellness concerns today.

Drinking large amounts of sugar rather than health-promoting distilled water will verify to have impacts on your physical and mental wellness. With an absence of correct dietary intake, it’s impossible to operate effectively. Recent research studies suggest that soda usage has a result on psychological health, making young adults show violent habits and tendencies.

Recently new research has revealed that drinking diet soda results in compromised vascular health, contributing to stroke, cardiovascular disease and vascular fatality. The study revealed that individuals who drank diet sodas daily were more likely to suffer a vascular event.

There is already a big quantity of proof mounting to suggest that these and other products that utilize artificial sweeteners have significant results on our wellness, adding to weight problems, diabetes, mental health troubles, and heart problems.

Aspartame has actually been associateded with neurological concerns, as well as brain tumors. Many of these artificial sweeteners are included prominently in a variety of products besides popular sodas. Aspartame as an example is used in almost every brand of chewing gum today and a variety of processed foods.

The harmful effects of these artificial sweeteners should be appropriately attended to, in addition to the truth that the average diet is frequently lacking in proper nutritional consumption. Taking care of both of these concerns is a proper action in attaining even more ideal health.

Fructose Fuels Cancer More than Other Forms of Sugar

Fructose might help in the formation of cancer cells more than other types of sugar, states a brand-new study from UCLA. Fructose is one of 3 natural, common sorts of sugar discovered in the human diet. Glucose is sugar formed from carbohydrates such as rice, pasta and potatoes. Sucrose is common table sugar, made from refined sugar cane. Fructose is a component of sucrose, as is glucose. Fructose is most typically consumed in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, largely from processed foods and sodas due to its relatively low cost and high flavor.

The study revealed that pancreatic cancer cells made use of fructose and glucose in various means, concluding that the cancer cells used fructose to multiply more easily than sugar. “These findings reveal that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation,” said Anthony Heaney of UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. The research study makes it clear that by decreasing or ceasing your consumption of fructose, whether in fruit, sodas or processed foods, you may have the ability to slow cancer cell development.

The study is particularly destructive to the corn industry, as well as different soda and food producers, who have long disagreed with the contention that high-fructose corn syrup has damaging health effects, declaring that all sugars are similarly metabolized by the body.

Effects of Drinking Soda (Pop)

It’s no news headline that soda– whether sweetened with sugar or aspartame — is bad for your health; even those who happily indulge in a can-a-day (or even more) habit can rattle off at least two or three negative effects of soda usage. However when it concerns the impacts of soft drink usage on the human body, the overall effect is downright frightening.

With high degrees of sugar, acids, chemicals and other unsafe ingredients, soda triggers more damage to the body than simply broadening the midsection. From stroke to kidney stones to dementia, below’s a look at what can occur long-term to the body for those who frequently consume soda.

Effects of Drinking Soda

Teeth

Sugar is not the only unsafe substance in soda that impacts dental health. A 2006 research study published in the Academy of General Dentistry journal found that drinking soda is nearly as unsafe for your teeth as drinking battery acid. That’s because soda actually includes acid (most typically citric and/or phosphoric), which desolves tooth enamel. And with a pH of 3.2, diet sodas are more acidic than sugared sodas.

According to the Colgate Oral and Dental Health Resource Center, soft beverages are among the most significant dietary sources of dental cavities. “Acids and acidic sugar byproducts in soft beverages soften tooth enamel, adding to the development of tooth decay. In extreme cases, softer enamel integrated with inappropriate brushing, grinding of the teeth or other conditions can cause the loss of teeth.”

Heart

Recent studies have shown a connection in between soda consumption and heart conditions. Most recently, a 2012 Harvard study discovered that one daily 12-ounce serving of regular soda “was linked to a 19 percent boost in the risk of heart attack,” according to the New York Times.

Some researchers state the cause is High Fructose Corn Syrup, which has actually been associateded with an enhanced risk of metabolic syndrome, a condition related to an elevated heart condition risk.

Nonetheless, others say diet sodas with sweetening agents are much worse on the heart. A research study from the University of Miami discovered that those who were day-to-day diet soda drinkers had a 61 percent increased risk of “cardiovascular events,” consisting of heart attack and stroke, than those who drank no soda — even when elements such as cigarette smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption and diet were managed.

Brain

A 2002 UCLA research study found that consuming excessive amounts of sugar decreases the production of the brain chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic aspect, or BDNF. “Without BDNF, our brains can not form brand-new memories and we can’t learn (or remember) much of anything,” according to a post in Forbes magazine.

Another study from the University of Copenhagen discovered that low BDNF levels are connected to depression and dementia. Exactly what’s even more, when BDNF levels are decreased, the body starts to become resistant to insulin, which kicks off a cascade of other health troubles.

But there’s a more instant trouble from consuming a lot of sweets: According to a 2010 study from the University of Minnesota, chronic sugar consumption dulls the brain’s mechanism for knowing when to stop eating.

Lungs

A current research study by the University of Adelaide discovered that drinking too much soda can enhance the threat for developing asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, or COPD. The more soda an individual consumes, the greater the danger of establishing those diseases. Other research studies suggest sodium benzoate, a preservative in soda, could affect the lungs directly: It enhances the quantity of sodium in the body while reducing the availability of potassium, triggering asthma in addition to chronic eczema.

Bones

Soda usage has been linked in a number of research studies to osteoporosis and loss of bone density. While many suggest that those who routinely drink soda — specifically in huge amounts — are not leaving sufficient space in their diets for healthier drinks, like milk and fortified juice, other studies say phosphoric acid might be the culprit.

“Phosphorus itself is an essential bone mineral,” writes Gina Shaw for WebMD, citing a research study from Tufts University. “But if you’re getting a disproportionate amount of phosphorus compared with the quantity of calcium you’re getting, that can result in bone loss.”.

Caffeine could also be a problem, as it can interfere with calcium absorption.

Kidneys

The high levels of phosphoric acid in colas have actually been associateded with kidney stones and other kidney issues, however diet cola is most likely to have a negative effect on kidney function. Diet cola is associated with a two-fold increased threat. According to a Harvard study, kidney function in 3,000 female patients started decreasing when they consume more than two sodas a day.

Digestive System

For those who have digestion problems to start with, consuming soda will only contribute to their difficulties. The carbonation in soft drinks can irritate the digestive system, particularly in those who have irritable bowel syndrome. Carbonation can cause an accumulation of excess gas in the abdominal area, leading to bloating, cramping and pain. The caffeine in soda can also enhance acid production, worsen episodes of diarrhea, and add to irregularity. In addition, the sweeteners made use of in soft drinks can exacerbate IBS symptoms due to their laxative effects.

Weight

Drinking just one soda a day equates to consuming 39 pounds of sugar annually, which is among the primary reasons that soda consumption is strongly associated with weight problems. A current Harvard research study discovered that sugar-sweetened refreshments are associated with even more than 180,000 obesity-related deaths each year, which implies that about one in every 100 deaths from obesity-related illness is triggered by drinking sugary drinks. An additional Harvard research study concluded that routinely consuming drinks high in sugar interacts with the genes that influence weight, substantially increasing a person’s chances for excessive obesity.

How to Change Your Soda Habit

Are you prepared to kick soda to the curb for ever? Good. While breaking the practice isn’t easy, it’s easier than you think.

1. Go cold turkey. Weaning off soda will just drag on the unavoidable or, worse, damage or even change your resolve. Once you’ve decided to quit, keep progressing and never ever regress.

2. Get ready for a mental fight. Chances are, your body is addicted to soda on some level. Know that you’re going to have serious withdrawals and quite a bit of psychological agony. However also know that this will only last a few days. Keeping in mind there will soon be an end will help you stay strong.

3. Find an alternative. To sidetrack you from the battle and satisfy your craving in a healthier way, find an appropriate replacement, like Sobe Life Water (the one with ‘0’ Calories). It’s very sweet and healthy for you. Sobe Life Water is sweetened with Erythritol and Stevia and fortified with vitamins. It’s also cheaper than anything you’ve been drinking. $1. for a 20 ounce bottle at Walmart, $0.83 at Sam’s Club. You’ll satisfy your sweet tooth and be less likely to relapse. And, honestly, you can’t even buy a 20 ounce bottle of water for a buck anymore.

4. Get some TLC. If your drink of choice was caffeinated, you will likely get withdrawal headaches. Treat these with OTC migraine medicines that have caffeine to treat the headache and help your body adapt to the sudden lack of caffeine.

5. Reward yourself. It’s OK to bribe yourself if it encourages you to cross the finish line. Set a goal, like no soda for a week or month. But reward yourself with something that has nothing to do with soda or sugar, like a new DVD.

C-Reactive Protein and Gum Disease

C-Reactive Protein and Gum Disease

Dozens of studies have shown that in many cases CRP (C-Reactive Protein) can be directly linked to periodontal disease. And once the disease is addressed, the CRP levels subside. Researchers at the University of North Carolina reported that 85 percent of heart attack patients have periodontal disease, compared to only 25 percent of individuals who haven’t had a heart attack. (BMC Infect Dis 02;2(1):20) (AMJ Med 02;113(6): 462–467) (J Periodontol 01;72(9):1221–1227)

If you have periodontal disease, you could be setting yourself up for a future stroke or heart attack. The presence of periodontal disease may be as important as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, smoking, or family history as a risk factor for death due to heart disease or stroke. (Ann Periodontol 01;6(1):20–29) (Ann Periodontol 98;3(1):127–134) (Curr Opin Periodontol 97;4:21–28) (Compendium 94;15(8):976,978–982,985–986)

The simple act of substituting xylitol, erythritol, stevia or Truvia for sugar in your diet can be a crucial step in preventing or eliminating gum disease, tooth loss, asthma, inner ear infections, chronic throat and sinus conditions, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that xylitol, erythritol, stevia and Truvia all make it hard for pathogenic bacteria to attach and “set up house” in the oral cavities. Also, the bacteria that remain attached ingest the xylitol, erythritol, stevia or Truvia and, over time, mutate to become less and less pathogenic. Xylitol-sweetened gums and mints are good ways to benefit from this “friendly” sugar. Also, Sobe Life Water (the one with 0 Calories) is sweetened with erythritol & stevia. You can now buy Truvia (erythritol & stevia) packets to use in place of sugar.

DO NOT switch to Aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal, AminoSweet). Aspartame is poisonous. See the article entitled “Aspartame- The Poison You Must Know About” at: http://wp.me/p4rplg-2J

Aspartame: The Poison You Must Know About

aspartame

Artificial sweeteners especially aspartame (AKA: Nutrasweet, Equal, etc.) have gotten a bad rap over the years, most likely due to studies showing they cause cancer. But not to worry Ajinomoto the company that makes Aspartame has changed the name to AminoSweet. It has the same toxic ingredients but a nice new sounding name. And if you or your child happens to be allergic to Aspartame, well don’t take it personally it’s just business.

Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners produce the taste sensation of sweetness, but not the satiety (the feeling of fullness) that naturally sweet whole foods and fruits do. This “void” left by artificial sweeteners and other chemical changes they trigger in the body leads to increased consumption of more carbohydrates and weight gain, along with a long list of other problems.

You have similar problems with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), which has become the sweetener of choice in thousands of products—including everything from ketchup and baked goods to soft drinks. Your pancreas doesn’t recognize HFCS as a sugar, and doesn’t produce the hormones amylin or leptin which provide that feeling of fullness or satiety I mentioned earlier and influence how fat is deposited within the body.

And now we’ve learned that HFCS is being contaminated with mercury during the manufacturing process— to such an extent that, based on average consumption rates, Americans could be ingesting close to 30 micrograms of mercury a day.

If you’re a diet soda lover, here’s something to consider. That soft drink may be refreshing but the evidence is mounting that it’s cancer in a can. Yet, thanks to the FDA, you won’t find a label anywhere that warns of the serious risks of the artificial chemical used to make these taste so sweet without sugar. In fact, the FDA has been strangely silent about warning you.

Today, I’ll tell you about very real problems with NutraSweet, or aspartame and how you can sweeten your favorite foods and drinks naturally and safely. A new study not only reinforces my view that aspartame in sufficient doses is a poison that can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and incurable cancers but also adds something new. What’s new is the evidence that levels of NutraSweet similar to those found in diet soft drinks cause breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and malignant tumors in animals.

They also discovered a sobering fact for expecting mothers: when exposed to aspartame from fetal life onwards, the risk that your child will eventually develop life-threatening cancer increases dramatically. So if you’re pregnant, I recommend that you put that diet soft drink down right now. And tell your young ones to do the same.

Despite the evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market . In continues to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things.

Most consumers are oblivious to the fact that Aspartame was invented as a drug but upon discovery of its’ sweet taste was magically transformed from a drug to a food additive.

Over 25 years ago, aspartame was first introduced into the European food supply. Today, it is an everyday component of most diet beverages, sugar-free desserts, and chewing gums in countries worldwide. But the tides have been turning as the general public is waking up to the truth about artificial sweeteners like aspartame and the harm they cause to health. The latest aspartame marketing scheme is a desperate effort to indoctrinate the public into accepting the chemical sweetener as natural and safe, despite evidence to the contrary.

Aspartame was an accidental discovery by James Schlatter, a chemist who had been trying to produce an anti-ulcer pharmaceutical drug for G.D. Searle & Company back in 1965. Upon mixing aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two naturally-occurring amino acids, he discovered that the new compound had a sweet taste. The company merely changed its FDA approval application from drug to food additive and, voila, aspartame was born.

G.D. Searle & Company first patented aspartame in 1970. An internal memo released in the same year urged company executives to work on getting the FDA into the “habit of saying yes” and of encouraging a “subconscious spirit of participation” in getting the chemical approved.

For years, the GD Searle Corp., tried in vain yo get it approved. No one wanted to go near the stuff. The FDA refused to approve it for 16 years. In fact, according to a report by Dr. Adrian Gross, the FDA’s own toxicologist, told Congress that “without a shadow of a doubt, aspartame can cause brain tumors and brain cancer…”

G.D. Searle & Company submitted its first petition to the FDA in 1973 and fought for years to gain FDA approval, submitting its own safety studies that many believed were inadequate and deceptive. Despite numerous objections, including one from its own scientists, the company was able to convince the FDA to approve aspartame for commercial use in a few products in 1974, igniting a blaze of controversy.

In 1976, then FDA Commissioner Alexander Schmidt wrote a letter to Sen. Ted Kennedy expressing concern over the “questionable integrity of the basic safety data submitted for aspartame safety”. FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill believed that a grand jury should investigate G.D. Searle & Company for lying about the safety of aspartame in its reports and for concealing evidence proving the chemical is unsafe for consumption.

Did you know it’s against the law to expose people to a drug found to induce cancer in experimental animals? (It’s called the “Delaney Clause.”) Doing so amounts to genocide and treason, both of which, as I understand it, are still illegal.

Anyway, instead of blacklisting the chemical with a “POISON!” sign like they should have, the perps down at the FDA stamped it with their coveted GRAS clearance. In case you’re not familiar with the acronym, it means “generally regarded as safe.”

The details of aspartame’s history are lengthy, but the point remains that the carcinogen was illegitimately approved as a food additive through heavy-handed prodding by a powerful corporation with its own interests in mind. Practically all drugs and food additives are approved by the FDA not because science shows they are safe but because companies essentially lobby the FDA with monetary payoffs and complete the agency’s multi-million dollar approval process.

Changing aspartame’s name to something that is “appealing and memorable”, in Ajinomoto’s own words, may hoodwink some but hopefully most will reject this clever marketing tactic as nothing more than a desperate attempt to preserve the company’s multi-billion dollar cash cow. Do not be deceived.

Did you know that 66 percent of adults and 40 percent of children consume products containing this deadly neurotoxin? (This statistic is from 2000, so I’m sure these percentages are higher by now—especially considering former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s Diet Coke push in public schools.)

For years, doctors and scientists have scratched their heads over the “mysterious” rise in neurological diseases. But there’s no mystery about it. Hundreds of diseases can be traced back to one root cause: aspartame. Over the years, various reports have implicated aspartame in headaches, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma, and cancer. It also appears to worsen or mimic the symptoms of such conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue, and depression.

And it makes sense: A toxin like aspartame goes to many different types of cells, but it seems to have a particular liking for the cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems. That means that the damage from aspartame can show up anywhere the nerves are—which, of course, is anywhere in the body. And because it attacks your body at the cellular level, it can cause any number of diseases. The collection of signs and symptoms will vary, but the diseases will still come back to one root cause—aspartame.

My advice is to steer clear of any product that contains NutraSweet. If you find that you’re suffering from any of the symptoms I’ve mentioned, stop consuming any “sugar-free” products for at least 60 days and see if they go away.

These toxins are MAKING US FAT!

Aside from these risks, now there’s even more proof that these toxins are helping you pack on the pounds. Some recent research conducted at Purdue University shows that a group of test subjects fed artificial sweeteners subsequently consumed THREE TIMES THE CALORIES of those given ordinary sugar (not a good thing to eat, either, by the way).

That means some of the very things most mainstream doctors recommend for weight loss (diet soda, Sweet-N-low, etc.) are causing us to crave calories and binge on unhealthy carbohydrates. No wonder we’re all getting fatter!

The use of aspartame is as detrimental to your health as any chemical ever! It’s not easy to avoid, either. Aspartame is in hundreds of different colas, desserts, candies, and other junk foods.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Baby Bottle Decay

Baby bottle tooth decay is a dental condition that can destroy the teeth of an infant or young child. The upper front teeth are the most susceptible to damage, but other teeth also may be affected.

What causes baby bottle tooth decay? Baby Bottle Decay

Baby bottle tooth decay is caused by the frequent and long-term exposure of a child’s teeth to liquids containing sugars. Among these liquids are milk, formula, fruit juice, sodas, and other sweetened drinks. The sugars in these liquids pool around the infant’s teeth and gums, feeding the bacteria that cause plaque. Every time your child consumes a sugary liquid, acid attacks his/her teeth. After numerous attacks, tooth decay can occur, resulting in baby bottle tooth decay.

Parents and care givers should be especially concerned with giving an infant a sugary drink at nap or night time. During sleep, the flow of saliva decreases, allowing the sugary liquids to pool around the child’s teeth for an extended period of time.

How to prevent baby bottle tooth decay

Parents sometimes do not realize that baby’s teeth are susceptible to decay as soon as they appear in the infant’s mouth. By the time the decay is noticed, it may be too late to save the child’s teeth. You can prevent this from happening to your child’s teeth by knowing how to protect them.

●     After each feeding wipe the child’s teeth and gums with a damp washcloth or small soft toothbrush to remove           plaque. Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth erupts. Flossing should being when all primary teeth have erupted, usually by age 2 or 2 1/2.
●     Never allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle containing a sweetened liquid.
●     If your child refuses to fall asleep without a bottle, simply fill it with water and nothing else.
●     If your local water supply contains fluoride then use non-fluoridated water. Do not let the child’s doctor prescribe a fluoride supplement. (See the post on fluoride)
●     Start dental visits between six and twelve months of age or at the age of cooperation, whichever comes last.

How serious is baby bottle tooth decay?

Baby bottle tooth decay can cause painful toothaches which can hinder eating. Severely decayed teeth can become infected and need to be extracted. If your child’s teeth are infected or lost too early due to baby bottle tooth decay, your child may have some of these problems:

●     Poor eating habits
●     Speech problems
●     Crooked teeth
●     Damaged adult (permanent) teeth
●     Yellow or brown adult (permanent) teeth

Keep your child happy and smiling by preventing baby bottle tooth decay.

Effects of Soda

What happens in the hour after drinking a 12 ounce soda that contains sugar, caffeine, and phosphoric acid? 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar flood your system in the first 10 minutes. Within 20 minutes, blood sugar spikes, prompting a burst of insulin, which causes your liver to convert sugar into fat. Forty minutes later, the phosphoric acid has bonded with magnesium, calcium, and zinc, which will be eliminated from your body instead of nourishing your body. And at about 60 minutes the inevitable sugar crash makes you feel sluggish and irritated.

Repeated many times the burst of insulin in response to the flood of sugar causes “Insulin Resistance” which is a precursor of Type 2 Diabetes. The sugar in the soda floods the germs in your mouth which consume some of it and excrete acid onto your teeth which causes the enamel to dissolve leading to decay. Worse yet, the phosphoric acid in the soda acts directly to cause tooth enamel to dissolve leading to faster decay.

So, in effect over time regular soda drinking causes one to become a fat, lazy diabetic with rotten or no teeth. Does that sound like something you’d like to become? I didn’t think so.

The Perils of Sugar

One of the most beneficial changes you can make is to get the sugar and refined carbohydrates out of your diet. Our bodies were never designed to handle the obscene amounts of simple carbohydrates they are being subjected to.sugar

Research of late has been confirming what “health nuts” have been stressing for decades: sugar kills. It took a while for scientists to confirm exactly how, but it’s now there for everyone to see.

■ Sugar and simple carbs (refined grains, high-fructose corn syrup, etc.) adversely affect blood lipids, increasing your risk for heart disease and stroke through fat accumulation, metabolic syndrome, obesity, premature aging, and type 2 diabetes.

■ Sugar molecules bond with proteins to create AGEs (advanced glycation endproducts)— which wreak havoc on blood vessels, including those of the heart and kidneys. AGEs are responsible for many of the long-term complications of diabetes.

■ Cancer cells thrive on sugars, particularly fructose.

It has been demonstrated that cancer cells actually metabolize glucose and fructose differently from other cells. While cancer thrives on both, it uses fructose specifically to proliferate. It’s no wonder that cancer has moved quickly up the list of killers in our society since we started adding high-fructose corn syrup to everything from sodas to bread. With such damning and irrefutable research, I still don’t understand why it hasn’t become standard practice to immediately put cancer patients on fructose-free diets to help disrupt cancer growth.

And, since our immune systems are trying to eliminate mutated, potentially cancerous cells on a daily basis, why would we even risk supplying these cells with the very compound they need to survive, grow, and spread within our body? Are soft drinks and high fructose sweetened foods really that hard to eliminate when you realize the cancer connection?

The natural fructose in fruit is nowhere near as damaging to your body as the processed high fructose sweeteners.
