Your regular 3 month or 6 month dental hygiene visit is actually one of the most important and cost-effective ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy and to minimize your dental expenses.
At Gentle Family Dentistry we have the best, friendliest and gentlest dental hygienists you will ever find. Kendra has been with us for over 15 years and our patients absolutely adore her. In all that time we have not had one complaint from any patient about the quality or gentleness of their dental cleanings. In fact, all of our patients agree that that was the best cleaning they’ve ever had anywhere.
It is a fact that a lot of people feel that “it’s just a cleaning, so it’s not that important”. That is actually the opposite of the truth. During your hygiene visit the hygienist not only cleans your teeth but works for small problems and large problems that may be occurring in your mouth that you are not yet aware of. Just because you have no pain doesn’t mean you have no problems.
I often tell patients that if you wait till it hurts or wait till it breaks in almost all cases you’ve waited too long. For the few hundred dollars a year it costs you for your regular hygiene visits you will save thousands of dollars in dental repair costs or save your teeth or both.
During your hygiene visit she will also evaluate the soft tissue in your mouth and use a small laser device to check for tiny new cavities that are undetectable by the naked eye. Those tiny cavities will eventually grow into large cavities sometimes needing extensive work. But, when found early enough, they can often be treated painlessly and inexpensively without even having any Novocain.
She will also discuss with you any problems or concerns you may be having or any questions you may have about your dental health or how to maintain it properly. If you are unsure about how to floss or brush properly or what dentifrices to use for certain desired outcomes she can recommend any number of possible choices.
Once a year she will also get a set of digital bitewing x-rays so the doctor can carefully check between your teeth for new cavities, defective fillings and other problems that may not have yet manifested themselves as sensitivity or pain. This is very important because once again it is easier and way less expensive to repair small problems than it is to wait until something breaks or a cavity gets to the nerve.
Then she will call in the Dr. who will do a complete intraoral exam, and oral cancer screening, a TMJ evaluation and a head and neck exam. The doctor will be looking for lumps, bumps and lesions that you don’t want him to find. But, if he does find some small problem early on in many cases your chances of complete recovery and healing are much better than they would be if the problem was ignored.
If you want to keep your teeth, keep them healthy and maintain a beautiful smile you must take regular action. That not only means daily flossing, thorough but gentle brushing and strict sugar control. But it also means that you must see your friendly dental hygienist on a regular basis.
Some folks can get away with seeing their hygienist every 6 months but others need to visit her every 3 months, especially if they have gum disease and don’t want to lose all their teeth.
All of the above is required if you want to maintain good dental health whether you have dental insurance or not. But in reality if you do have dental insurance and you don’t visit your hygienist at least twice a year you are literally throwing that money away. Consider this, when has your dental insurance company ever sent you a big check at the end of the year as a rebate for not using your insurance that year? That just doesn’t happen. If you don’t use it, you lose it.
So, pick up the phone now and call Gentle Family Dentistry at 814–693–6777 and schedule an appointment with one of our dental hygienists who will help you keep your teeth in your head where they belong.
